Each year for Boo-at-the-Zoo (BATZ) and ZooLights, the Birmingham Zoo asks for volunteers to make this a fun and exciting event. It takes about 100 volunteers (for BATZ) and 60 volunteers (for ZooLights) each night to help make this fun for the family and kids that come. I would greatly appreciate it if you would signup to assist and if could help the zoo by informing friends, family members, teachers, and others about these great volunteer opportunities here at the Zoo.

There are many different positions for volunteers that include: the talking pumpkin, managing games, candy stations, Alien Reptile Experience, passing out maps, giving directions, helping load and unload the train, staffing train crossings for safety, and lots more.

Volunteers: All volunteers must be at least 13 years of age to volunteer. Adults and groups are welcome. We have a maximum allowed number of volunteers each night so you must contact Brian Kutsch with the night(s) that you or your group can volunteer. Spaces fill up quickly so please sign up in advance. If you must cancel, please call or email so that we may open up your volunteer spot to others. Also, remember that all volunteers must sign in and out to ensure that we know that all volunteers have completed their assignments. If you need proof of your volunteer hours for this event, please bring a sheet with you and we will sign it when you sign-out for the evening. Hour sheets will not be handed out or signed after you leave Zoo grounds.

Volunteer Times: All volunteers must mail, fax or bring a signed release form. Teens must have the release form signed by their parents/guardians in order to volunteer. We ask that all volunteers arrive by 4:30PM so that they may sign in and find their first station for the evening, and you continue volunteering until 9:30PM. Teens can be picked at the first aid station at the font entrance to the Zoo when they are done with volunteering.

Behavior: Please remember to have fun and follow directions. Those with disruptive behaviors and an inability to following directions will be dismissed.

Dinner and Valuables: Please do not bring anything of value to the zoo. We cannot be responsible for any lost items. We also do not have a place to leave purses or other items. If you leave your items, you will have to be responsible for any losses. Please eat before you come to this event. You should have time for breaks but they may be at odd times due to scheduling.

Boo-at-the Zoo (BATZ):
Times are 4:30 to 9:30
October 9, 10, 11; 16, 17, 18; 23, 24, 25; 30, 31

Costumes: Although optional, we would like for the volunteers to dress in friendly costumes. Please remember that costumes cannot be gory, suggestive, too scary, or revealing. I and the Zoo staff will be the final judge. Please remember that this event is for kids from 6 months to about 10 years of age. We cannot have costumes that are not appropriate. If you think that we might say no, then please alter the costume. We don't want to send anyone home because of costumes or behaviors. This is for fun and very young kids come to this event.

ZooLights:
Times are 4:30 pm to 9:30 pm.
